1. Can you describe Ironspark using ten words or less?
Supernatural meets Buffy but queer fairies, magic, and marshmallows.
2. What was the hardest part of writing Ironspark?
I think finding the voice was the hardest part. I think I must have restarted Ironspark four or five times before I finally decided to risk an unreliable and go to first person
3. What's your favourite quote from Ironspark?
(re: putting out milk for the Fae) “Sounds like all we’ll get is a bunch of stray cats. I don’t want to catch ringworm.” This is one of the few quotes in the book inspired by real life.
4. How do you pick names for your characters? Do any of them have special meaning?
Sometimes I go and pick particular names, sometimes they just happen. For example, Dom and Gwen just happened. Bryn and Jasika came specifically from actresses whom I admired while I was drafting.
5. What does your bookshelf look like? Is it organized and clean, or messy and chaotic?
It's sort of yes to both. I have an organization system. (Read, Unread, Tolkien, Language, Special Interest, and Comics). Beyond that, it's all over the place but I love to use it as a backdrop.
When C.M. McGuire, author of Ironspark, was a child, she drove her family crazy with her nonstop stories. Lucky for them, she eventually learned to write and gave their ears a rest. This love of stories led her to college where she pursued history (semi-nonfictional storytelling), anthropology (where stories come from) and theater (attention-seeking storytelling). When she isn't writing, she's painting, crocheting, gardening, baking and teaching the next generation to love stories as much as she does.
