Review: Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

Title: Sweet Evil
Author: Wendy Higgins
My rating: 4.8 hearts
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance
Publication date: April 30th, 2013
Publisher: HarperTeen
Summary: Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life? (summary from Goodreads)

My thoughts: I truly loved the previous book, Sweet Evil, so my expectations were huge. Like almost unreachable huge. I wasn’t disappointed.
Since the first book, Anna has changed a lot. She’s not the same perfect good girl. She’s started giving in a little to the temptations of her sin, Substance abuse, although she still doesn’t enjoy getting other people to drink. She stays away from drugs. She’s not exactly “bad”, but she’s definitely changed.
I liked the new Anna. It felt like Wendy, once again, managed a good balance between the good and bad in people, but this time, it was the good balancing the bad in Anna, rather than the bad balancing the good in her, like it was in Sweet Evil.
Otherwise, Anna’s pretty much the same. She has to pretend to not care about Patti, to not be too close to her friends, to not care about the people she gets to drink too much, but she does. And all the while, she’s trying to get over Kaidan, but you can’t choose who to fall in love with, no matter how much you want to.
Then we have Kaidan. In the most part of Sweet Peril, he’s a complete jerk to Anna. He’s mostly ignoring her, but when they do meet, he’s doing everything to hurt her.  Throughout most of the book, I wanted to jump into the book and shake some sense into him, or strangle him. But I couldn’t help but love him. While I was hoping they would end up together, find a way around the Dukes’ stupid rules, an equally big part of me was hoping they wouldn’t, so I could get him all for myself. I still haven’t decided.
When I read Sweet Evil, I tried to take as long time as possible. This time, that wasn’t a possibility. I tried to put it away, I did. But I wasn’t strong enough. I finished it in a day. And now I regret it, because I can’t get the last book, Sweet Reckoning, until August 3rd, and I’m dying to know how it ends!
Everything was just as good as the first book, if not better. The writing, the characters, the plot. But what I like the most about The Sweet Trilogy is its originality. It’s hard to come by angel books that are completely original. They all remind you of each other in one way or another, but not this series.
The only thing I didn’t like was the love triangle. When I started Sweet Peril, I really hoped it would be gone, or at least less focus on it, but no. It was more focus on it. I was so agitated at Anna and Kopano, especially after an accident a while into the book, which I won’t mention, because that’s a spoiler. But except for that, I liked it.
The ending was awful. And not in a bad-written way, but in a too-many-feels, that-wasn’t-supposed-to-happen, crying and not breathing way. I don’t think I’ve ever been that sad a book’s ended. So, basically, I loved it. For those of you who are hesitant to read this, because you don’t usually like angel books, try it. I won’t promise you’ll like it, but I’d definitely recommend it.

  1. Don't worry, the love triangle is just a plot device in this book, it goes away in the last book! So glad you loved this book, I think it's AMAZING!

    1. Well, that's a relief. I really thought it would've been better without the love triangle. And I agree, it is amazing. I can't wait for Sweet Temptation to be released.
I love your blog title, by the way. That's exactly how I prefer my life to be :)
