Blog Tour: The Secrets We Kept by Lily Velez

Title: The Secrets We Kept
Author: Lily Velez
My rating: 4 hearts
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publication date: November 8th 2015
Publisher: Blue Typewriter Press
Synopsis: One year. That's how long it's been since childhood sweethearts Sully Graham and Cadence Gilbertson broke up, since one adoption and one out-of-state move turned their worlds upside down.

Suddenly, Cadence is back in New York City, but something's different about her. The light in her eyes, the music in her laughter, the warmth in her smile—all of those things have entirely vanished. In their place stand the makings of a girl Sully can't even begin to recognize, much less understand.

Still, despite the collective history of heartbreak between them, he’s convinced he can win her trust again, and he’s committed to proving the invincibility of their love no matter what it takes.

But Cadence is quietly harboring secrets of her own. Dark secrets. Ugly secrets. Secrets that could break a person. And though broken herself and unbearably lonely, she's determined to protect Sully from her terrible, biting truths. Even if it means locking him out of her life forever.

The only problem is it seems her heart hasn’t quite received the memo. One glimpse of him is all it takes for her to trip into familiar (and, she’ll admit, addictive) feelings that threaten to all but consume her. Now her biggest fear is that her secrets will begin to slowly unravel one by one...long before Sully’s resolve ever does.

The Secrets We Kept is a moving story about first love, friendship, and forgiveness, and the enduring bonds that forever connect us and give us our strength. (synopsis from

My thoughts: It’s been a while since I got this caught up in a book. This close to Christmas break, I’ve had a lot to do in school, so I haven’t had the time or patience to sit down and relax to read. Maybe it’s because of that that I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in a while, or maybe it’s simply because I haven’t found a book this good in a while, but either way, I was so happy and a little surprised when I noticed I really didn’t want to put this away. I wanted to stay up all night to finish it, and I almost did.

I’ve had this on my to-read a long time, but I didn’t read it, but then my best friend read it, and she totally loved it, and she couldn’t stop talking about it, and since we have a very similar taste in books, I decided to read it. And I totally loved it.
So let’s start with the characters, one of the most important things in a book, at least for me. I loved Alina. Sure, when she was basically ready to give up, I was close to getting annoyed with her, but I still understood her actions. I could really relate to her, to her want – and need – to fit in, to belong somewhere. That need explained a lot of her actions. I also loved that even though everything that could go wrong went wrong, she didn’t give up. She continued to fight for what she believed in, even though she wasn’t even entirely sure what she was fighting for. There was a few moments that I truly thought she would break, and give up, and a weaker person would, but she didn’t.
So how about the Darkling and Mal? I have to say, I’m team Darkling. I’m not really sure about Mal, he still has a lot of convincing to do before I can accept him. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a bad character, but … well, I just don’t like him. Simple as that. But the Darkling, on the other hand … I’m not really sure what to say about him. Let’s just say that I have very confused feelings about him and Alina. I’m not sure what I feel. Let’s leave it at that.
Let’s talk about the plot. I liked the plot, it was very original and interesting, and although it wasn’t very fast-paced at times, it still kept my interest alive and even though there were some quiet moments, I had to know what would happen. And Alina’s training to become a Grisha kept it interesting and made it seem more fast-paced than it was.
One of the things I loved the most about this book was the world Bardugo has built. I love a book with good world-building, especially in a Fantasy novel, and this was one of the better ones I’ve read. The world she created, and the country Alina lived in, Ravka, it felt so real and believable, and I found myself so caught up in her world that I needed a moment to get back to the real world again. This is what I call good world-building. Many times, in books like this, the world-building is faulty, which makes the book unreal and unbelievable, but that’s not the case here.
I can’t wait to read the sequel, I need to know what happens with Alina. Interesting and relatable, Shadow and Bone will take you on an emotional roller coaster and will keep you on your toes through the whole book.

Keen Cover Friday: These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Hosted by Keep Booked
Today I have a really beautiful cover to share with you all. It's the cover of These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner.

I picked this cover because I love that green dress, and I really like the colors. Also, I think the stars in the background, and that they are floating around in outer space, is really cool, and looks very pretty, too. Might be because I love space, but that cover totally draws me in.

Title: Wild Reckless
Author: Ginger Scott
My rating: ❤❤❤❤
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publication date: March 17th 2015
Publisher: Ginger Scott - Little Miss Write
Synopsis: Kensington Worth had a vision for her senior year. It involved her best friends, her posh private school in downtown Chicago and time alone with her piano until her audition was perfected, a guaranteed ticket into the best music programs in the world.

Instead, a nightmare took over.

It didn’t happen all at once, but her life unraveled quickly—a tiny thread that evil somehow kept pulling until everything precious was taken from her. She was suddenly living miles away from her old life, trapped in an existence she didn’t choose—one determined to destroy her from the inside, leaving only hate and anger behind. It didn’t help that her neighbor, the one whose eyes held danger, was enjoying every second of her fall.

Owen Harper was trouble, his heart wild and his past the kind that’s spoken about in whispers. And somehow, his path was always intertwined with Kensington’s, every interaction crushing her, ruining her hope for any future better than her now. Sometimes, though, what everyone warns is trouble, is exactly what the heart needs. Owen Harper was consumed with darkness, and it held onto his soul for years. When Kensington looked at him, she saw a boy who’d gotten good at taking others down when they threatened his carefully balanced life. But the more she looked, the more she saw other things too—good things…things to admire.

Things…to love. Things that made her want to be reckless.

And those things…they were the scariest of all. (synopsis from Goodreads)

Review: Sweet Liar (Candy #2) by Debra Doxer

*I was provided with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This did not in any way affect my rating or my review in the slightest. All thoughts expressed in this review is unbiased and my own.*

Title: Sweet Liar
Author: Debra Doxer
My rating: 3.7 hearts
Genre: Young Adult, Romance
Publication date: October 20th 2015
Synopsis: Sometimes lies are sweeter than the truth.

Beauty is alluring; it can disguise the ugliness beneath. But scarred beauty is even more potent to a girl who vowed never to let her heart be broken again. It was an easy vow for Candy to keep until she met Jonah, an arrogant boy with a face that would be too perfect if not for the scar that marred the skin beside his Eye.

That imperfect boy earned her trust and won her heart, but the ties that bind people together are fragile, especially when lies are told. Trust is also fragile, and once broken, doesn’t heal like a heart. Trust has to be earned again, and Jonah desperately wants Candy’s trust back.

But Candy has more than Jonah to worry about. Her father is in trouble, and she intends to help him whether he likes it or not. People tell her he’s a bad man, and that may be true, but he’s not all bad. Deep down, she understands his brand of badness because she’s so much like him.

When Candy finally learns the truth, she’ll have to grow up fast, let go of old grievances, and realize that being vulnerable doesn’t make her weak. In fact, opening herself up may be the very thing that makes her whole again. (synopsis from Goodreads)

Swoon Worthy Saturday: Daemon from the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Hosted by Stay Bookish

My pick for SWS this week is Daemon from the Lux. Since Oblivion will be released soon, I decided to start re-reading the series, and was reminded how much I love the characters, especially Daemon. He is a bit of a jerk towards Katy in Obsidian but I forgave him for that, because, honestly, who can stay mad at him?

Review: All Played Out (Rusk University #3) by Cora Carmack

Title: All Played Out
Author: Cora Carmack
My rating: 5 hearts
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publication date: May 12th 2015
Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks
Synopsis: First person in her family to go to college? CHECK.
Straight A’s? CHECK.
On track to graduate early? CHECK.
Social life? …..yeah, about that….

With just a few weeks until she graduates, Antonella DeLuca’s beginning to worry that maybe she hasn’t had the full college experience. (Okay... Scratch that. She knows she hasn't had the full college experience).

So Nell does what a smart, dedicated girl like herself does best. She makes a "to do" list of normal college activities.

Item #1? Hook up with a jock.

Rusk University wide receiver Mateo Torres practically wrote the playbook for normal college living. When he’s not on the field, he excels at partying, girls, and more partying. As long as he keeps things light and easy, it's impossible to get hurt... again. But something about the quiet, shy, sexy-as-hell Nell gets under his skin, and when he learns about her list, he makes it his mission to help her complete it.

Torres is the definition of confident (And sexy. And wild), and he opens up a side of Nell that she's never known. But as they begin to check off each crazy, exciting, normal item, Nell finds that her frivolous list leads to something more serious than she bargained for. And while Torres is used to taking risks on the field, he has to decide if he's willing to take the chance when it's more than just a game.

Together they will have to decide if what they have is just part of the experiment or a chance at something real. (synopsis from Goodreads)

Summary: New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel. (summary from Goodreads)

My thoughts: I was a little hesitant to read this at first, but I’m glad I gave it a chance, because it was far better than I expected it to be.

“In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.”
   Let’s start with Dallas.
Dallas has some serious daddy issues. Her dad is pretty overprotective, and he doesn’t want her to leave Texas, which is why she ends up in Rusk University, when she wants to go to a university with a good dance program. When she was in high school, her dad was football coach, and she was looking forward to him not working where she went to school. Then he starts working as the coach at Rusk University, which complicates her plan of enjoying college without having her dad breathing down her neck.
   I really liked Dallas.
Except for the fact that she loves dancing (like me, haha), she felt real. She was easy to love and connect with. She’s brutally honest, which is pretty obvious from the start.
   Dallas isn’t perfect.
In fact, she has somethings she could really work on, but that’s what I loved about her. No one is perfect, and it’s important in books that the characters aren’t perfect. She let her previous experiences keep her from letting people in, especially football players, since a football player hurt her in high school. She’s scared of being hurt again.
What was so great was the character development.
Dallas really grows throughout the story, learns from her mistakes and get stronger from the hard things she faced.
   Then we have Carson.
He’s a football player, aspiring to become the quarterback to get a scholarship. I liked Carson, too. The chemistry between Carson and Dallas is obvious from the beginning.
I liked that it was from both Dallas and Carson’s perspective; it gives the reader a better picture of everything that happens.
Sweet, humorous, sexy – All Lined Up has it all!
The plot was good, and it didn’t take long for me to get invested with the characters and caught up in the book. It had me giggling, swooning, laughing and crying from the first page to the very last one.

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance
Publication date: April 30th, 2013
Publisher: HarperTeen
Summary: Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?
