Characters as Dancers: Hexen's Cross Edition

Which dance style would fit the characters from Hexen’s Cross the best? In this post, I will match some of the characters from Hexen’s Cross by J. Kowallis with the dance that would be perfect for them. Read on to find out why Taran should dance ballet and why Coll would be an amazing tango dancer! Or, you can check out my five-star review of the book (by the way, you totally need to read it).

Taran Grim
Taran is a professor, which means she has to be a bit strict. She’s very interested in Germanic folklore, since it’s her family history, and she likes researching the old stories. She’s serious and dedicated, , and she has a good focus. She’s not the type to ever go into something half’hearted. So for Taran, I think ballet would be perfect! It’s the dance that probably has the most story, and it requires focus and dedication. Not only that, but because of the focus required, it would be the perfect distraction from her hectic and stressful life (and her work of saving the hexen race). Ballet is incredibly challenging, and Taran is just stubborn enough to make it work.

Coll Donovan
The dance I’ve picked for Coll is tango. Tango is a very intense, emotional dance, just like Coll. It’s a couple dance, which I think fits Coll (and his interest in women) perfectly. It’s filled with passion and strong emotion – be it bitterness, sadness, happiness or any other emotion. It requires close proximity to your dance partner (which I doubt Coll would mind) and it requires the man to really lead, and it’s very masculine. But Coll is the kind of character who won’t want too many rules to follow, which makes tango perfect for him, with room to improvise.

Evangeline Cook
Evangeline is Taran’s colourful, energetic best friend. For Evangeline, I’ve picked disco. Disco is fast and full of energy. Just like Evangeline, it’s very colourful and generally a happy dance. It’s a popular dance to compete in. There are high requirements for fitness and strength – and when competing in freestyle, acrobatics are allowed. But the most important thing in dancing disco is to have the energy that is characteristic of the dance. It requires energy, and I think she could be just stubborn enough to make it through.

Title: Hexen's Cross
Series: Hexen's Cross #1
Author: J. Kowallis
My rating: 5 hearts
Genre: New Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Pub. date: May 1st 2018
Synopsis: The magic calls her.
A prophecy binds her.
The ancestors guide her.

Dr. Taran Grim, a young professor of occult studies, knows the written history of witches better than anyone in her field. And she should. She’s one of them.

After a mysterious stranger arrives at her office inquiring about the mythical staff of Woden, Taran’s curiosity reveals a millennia-old prophesy directly tied to her. The answers wait in Bryden, England and the only person who can help her gain access to the hidden valley is the descendant of Ruhmactir, and a member of the shape-shifting Geri clan: Collens “Coll” Donovan.

But the Donovans have secrets of their own, and Taran’s underdeveloped magic is wreaking strange havoc on her life. If she can’t manage her magic and strike a truce with Coll, they’ll fail to prevent the prophesied event known as Deireanhexe: the end of the hexen race. (synopsis from Goodreads)
